A sign of the times -- through the tale of one defiantly ignored sign. Plus: a T-shirt that I spotted this week sent me down an historical rabbit hole.
I had a troubling experience with AI this week. My students’ presenting their research clearly used AI but it was only clear to me 2 days later. I have a lot of discussion and problem solving to do. I thoroughly enjoyed the Octavia Spencer movie but still never thought of Madam CJ as a builder. I enjoyed this tale a lot, Matt.
Thanks much, Patti. It's a rampant problem that ain't going away, this issue of people using AI to shortcut the process (and shortcut their own development).
In response to the first question, re: which captions people liked more, 18 of 27 said they liked Group II more.
In response to the second question, in which people were asked to identify which one was AI-generated, 17 of 26 said they believed it was Group I.
Here's the scoop: AI indeed generated the Group I quips, so most people ascertained that accurately. I'm also heartened that 2/3 of folks preferred the quips that I created with my own brain.
When I asked one person (a family member) who answered correctly what was the tip-off, she noted that AI "would never come up with Growl Movement." I don't know about "never," because AI is getting better every moment, but at least this time, that's correct.
…and that is one cool T-shirt. I had the pleasure of interviewing Maya Angelou at the 2004 DNC in Boston. One inspiring woman.
Growl movement. Love it.
Note my comments about the poll results and how "growl movement" was a tipoff to one family member that I had created that set of one-liners.
Every mention of Frederick Douglass is an opportunity for me to recommend Colum McCann's wonderful "Transatlantic." I love it so much that even though it's only the 3rd of the month, I'm sharing a precious NYT gift link to the review. https://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/23/books/review/transatlantic-by-colum-mccann.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Ek8.p42A.xKfig5NWeEr2&smid=url-share

Following up on the two poll questions:
